Stormwater ponds are designed to function as artificial wetlands. In this project, water enters from the top of the photo and flows through a diverse array of wetland plant species before reaching the outlet, where it returns to Lake Waikare.

The goal is for the plants to trap and utilize heavy metals, nutrients, and sediment, significantly improving the water quality as it filters through and re-enters the lake.

The pond features varying water levels, each supporting different wetland species.

In the higher zones, species like Carex secta, Carex geminata, Cyperus ustulatus, and Eleocharis acuta thrive. In the deeper water zones, we introduced a mix of Juncus pallidus, Eleocharis sphacelata, Machaerina articulata, Machaerina rubiginosa, and Machaerina tenax.

This thoughtful planting enhances biodiversity while supporting the pond’s role in improving water quality.”

Let’s work together to create more innovative solutions like this—where nature and design unite to protect our waterways, restore ecosystems, and secure a sustainable future for our environment.
